How to analyze a speech

 

Connotation vs. denotation (= literal meaning)
A word can have connotative meanings.
‚Home‘, for example, connotes family, comfort and security.
‚Politician‘ often has a negative connotation of wickedness and insincerity while ’statesperson‘ connotes sincerity.
Metaphors are words that connote meanings that go beyond their literal meanings.
Many negatively connoted words are used in this essay.

positive/ negative adjectives and/or comparatives/ superlatives:
powerful, more powerful, most powerful etc.

Rule of three (= tricolon):
– use of three related elements for maximum impact
– a kind of parallelism where words, phrases or sentences are arranged in groups of three.
